GamCare, the UK’s leading provider of information, advice and support for anyone affected by problem gambling, has released its Annual Report for 2023-24, revealing a substantial increase in contacts to its National Gambling Helpline.
The report highlights the growing demand for gambling harm prevention and treatment services amidst ongoing discussions about regulatory reforms in the UK gambling sector.
Record-Breaking Helpline Contacts
The National Gambling Helpline, operated by GamCare, experienced an unprecedented 25% rise in calls and online chats during the 2023-24 period. A total of 55,228 contacts were recorded, marking a significant increase from the previous year. This surge in helpline usage underscores the escalating prevalence of gambling-related issues in the UK and emphasises the crucial role that GamCare plays in addressing these concerns.
Margot Daly, Executive Chair of GamCare, commented on the organisation’s response to this increased demand: “Throughout a challenging year and with heightened demand for our services, GamCare’s staff have got on with the job of preventing harm where possible and treating harm where necessary.”
Supportive Interventions and Treatment Referrals

Of the total contacts received, 74% resulted in supportive interventions. This translates to 41,070 interactions where individuals received initial guidance, advice, and referrals for structured treatment programmes. These interventions often serve as the first step towards recovery for those struggling with gambling-related harm.
GamCare reported delivering 9,100 free treatment sessions during the year, with an impressively short average waiting time of 2.1 days between referral and treatment. This rapid response highlights the organisation’s commitment to providing timely support to those in need.
The effectiveness of GamCare’s referral system was further validated by a report from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, which noted that 57% of individuals in gambling harm treatment were referred through GamCare’s services.
Expanding Prevention Efforts
In addition to its helpline operations, GamCare significantly expanded its prevention initiatives during the 2023-24 period. The organisation implemented targeted programmes that offered specialised training to 10,344 professionals, equipping them with the skills to recognise signs of gambling harm and guide individuals towards appropriate support.
Furthermore, GamCare’s educational outreach extended to 53,324 young people, parents, and children. These efforts aimed to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with gambling and provide tools for identifying and addressing gambling-related harm.
Focus on Vulnerable Groups
GamCare’s Annual Report also highlighted the organisation’s commitment to addressing gambling harm among specific vulnerable groups. One notable initiative was the Women’s Programme, which focused on the unique challenges faced by women affected by problem gambling.
In collaboration with partner organisations like Refuge, the Women’s Programme trained 3,813 professionals to identify and address gambling-related harm specifically among women. This targeted approach demonstrates GamCare’s recognition of the diverse needs within the community affected by problem gambling.
Seasonal Trends and Festive Period Challenges

The report also touched upon seasonal trends in gambling behaviour, referencing findings from a GamCare survey conducted in December. The survey revealed a concerning increase in gambling activity during the festive season, with 59% of respondents with gambling problems reporting a higher likelihood of gambling during Christmas, up from 37% the previous year.
This seasonal spike was reflected in helpline usage, with December 2023 seeing a 39% increase in contacts compared to the same period in the previous year. This marked the busiest Christmas on record for the National Gambling Helpline, highlighting the need for continued support and vigilance during traditionally challenging periods.
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
As GamCare continues to adapt to the evolving landscape of gambling in the UK, the organisation faces both challenges and opportunities. The significant increase in helpline contacts underscores the growing need for support services, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of GamCare’s outreach efforts in encouraging individuals to seek help.
The ongoing discussions surrounding the UK government’s white paper on gambling reform present an opportunity for GamCare to contribute its expertise and insights to shape future policies. As the sector undergoes potential changes, GamCare’s role in providing support, education, and treatment is likely to become even more crucial.
In conclusion, GamCare’s Annual Report for 2023-24 paints a picture of an organisation rising to meet the increasing challenges posed by problem gambling in the UK. Through its expanded helpline services, prevention programmes, and targeted initiatives, GamCare continues to play a vital role in mitigating gambling-related harm and supporting those affected by problem gambling.
